In 1951 a new dealership was announced by the Chevrolet Motor Division. Mr. C. G.(Gil) Barrett, an executive with General Motors, purchased and became President of Barrett Chevrolet in Berlin.
When the dealership opened its doors, there were a total of 10 employees between sales, service and the parts departments. Mr. Barrett operated the business for 17 years during which time the business grew and Mr. Barrett earned a fine reputation as a businessman and member of the community. Mr. Barrett passed away in 1968.
After Mr. Barrett's death his sons, John G. Barrett and James G. Barrett, were appointed Chevrolet and Oldsmobile dealers by General Motors.
Over the years the brothers put great emphasis on customer satisfaction and won many awards from GM. Jim won the Time-Life Dealer of the Year Award in 1989. In keeping with the family tradition Jack and Jim became very active in community service.
Jack was the first President of the Berlin-Ocean City Jaycees and was a member and former President of the Berlin Lion's Club. He served on the parish council of St. Mary Catholic Church in Ocean City.
Jim was a former President of the Berlin-Ocean City Jaycees, Berlin Lion's Club, Berlin City Council Member, and served 12 years as a Worcester County Commissioner. He was a trustee for St .John Neumann Roman Catholic Church. He served as President of the Atlantic General Hospital Board.
In November of 1982 a new line of cars was added to Barrett Chevrolet/Olds Inc - a full line of Chrysler, Dodge, Dodge Trucks and Jeep were added to the franchise.
Over the years Jim's 3 sons joined the dealership, Russ in 1984, John in 1993, and Stephen in 1995.
Sadly Jim passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2004. As one of the many tributes to Jim, Atlantic General Hospital dedicated The James G. Barrett Medical Office Building in Jim's memory.
A year later Jack retired and Russ, John, and Stephen took over the business.
Russ is a member and former president of the Berlin Lion's Club, active member of the United Way of the Lower Eastern Shore, a Board Member of Atlantic General Hospital, and is a member of St. John Neumann Roman Catholic Church. He lives in Berlin with his wife, Karen. Their daughter, Jamie, is attending graduate school in California.
John is a Board Member of the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore, is a member of the Berlin Planning and Zoning Board, and is a member of St. John Neumann Roman Catholic Church. He lives in Berlin with his wife, Barbie, and their two children, Taylor and James.
Stephen served on the SIAC Committee at Buckingham Elementary and is presently on the SIAC Committee at Berlin Middle School. He is a past member of the Corporate Board of Atlantic General Hospital, and is a member of St. John Neumann Roman Catholic Church .He lives in Berlin with his wife, Dawn, and their two children, Lauren and Will.
